Matisse's Window

“Matisse’s Window”

Women’s Art Retreat

May 21 - 17, 2017

Villa le Rêve

Matisse’s Former Home and Studio

Vence, France

Henri Matisse is one of the most beloved and renowned artists of the twentieth century. Matisse created some of his finest paintings and the famous “Jazz” series paper cutouts in Villa le Rêve, a charming house and studio in the beautiful Côte d’Azure region of southern France. Imagine painting each morning and looking out at the same view that inspired Matisse!

Our small group will gather at Villa le Rêve and create our own art, using three shared studio spaces with a view of Vence and the garden where Matisse sketched. The heart of the old village of Vence is a short walk away with an assortment of delightful shops, art galleries, restaurants, a swimming pool and two art supply stores. Artists may work at the villa or decide to venture out to local painting sites on foot, bicycle or convenient public transportation.

Participants are invited to tour key sites to understand the rich history of Matisse’s artistic accomplishments. Chapelle du Rosaire (the famous chapel he designed) is just steps from Villa le Rêve) and nearby Musèe Matisse is must see site, housed in a gorgeous Italian Villa in sunny, cosmopolitan Nice. People may also choose to visit several other fantastic museums on their own or in small groups, all within a short distance to Vence: Foundation Maeght in St. Paul de Vence, The Chagall Museum, The Picasso Museum in Antibes, The Jean Cocteau Museum in Menton and The Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer.

Each day will provide an opportunity for you to spend time immersing yourself in art. Whether you work solo or in the company of other artists, the retreat will provide an opportunity to dedicate time for exploring and thinking about your own journey as an artist. Just as Matisse, Derain, Picasso and many other artists conversed and connected along the French Riviera, we too can foster a deeper understanding of our art through this shared experience.

Partners and spouses accompanying artists on the trip may choose to participate in a variety of wonderful activities, including tours of local vineyards and markets, bicycling in Nice and personal exploration. This unforgettable art retreat provides you with time for creativity, immersion into the rich culture of Provence and the chance to renew your spirit.
